Make my life oh Lord a reflection of you as I study your word.
Bible Text
Job 9:1-35
Meditation Question
► Q 1: What does the passage teach about God the Father, or God the Son or God the Holy Spirit?
Scripture Union Daily Guide 27th August 2025 Outline
Job responded, but his words were directed more to the All-knowing God than to his ignorant friend. He did not mince his words but spoke frankly from the depth of his inexplicable suffering. First, he extols the greatness of God – His profound wisdom and vast power (Job 9:4). The sun, the seas, and the constellations in the starry heavens belong to Him (Job 9:9). He performs wonders and miracles (Job 9:10); and when He is angry, no one can restrain Him (Job 9:13). He is both the plaintive and the Judge (Job 9:15). How do you dispute with someone you cannot even see (Job 9:11)? All of these go to emphasise Job’s sense of helplessness (Job 9:27-30).
Today, we know a whole lot more than was known in Job’s time. Our best estimate, even recently, was that there are probably 2 billion galaxies in the skies, each harbouring about a billion stars. Now we know there are a thousand times more – not two billion but two trillion. Should we not be even more in awe of the Almighty Creator of heaven and earth? “Immortal, Invisible, God, only wise” is how the hymn writer describes Him.

Praise: Immortal, invisible, God only wise, .
In light inaccessible hid from our eyes, .

Insight

IMMORTAL, INVISIBLE, GOD ONLY WISE
1. Immortal, invisible, God only wise,
In light inaccessible, hid from our eyes,
Most blessèd, most glorious, the Ancient of Days,
Almighty, victorious,
Thy great name we praise.
2. Unresting, unhasting, and silent as light,
Nor striving, nor wasting, Thou rulest in might;
Thy justice, like mountains, high soaring above
Thy clouds, which are fountains
Of mercy and love.
3. To all life Thou givest, to both great and small;
In all life Thou livest, the true life of all;
We blossom and flourish as leaves on the tree,
To wither and perish—
But naught changeth Thee.
4. Today and tomorrow with Thee still are Now;
Nor trouble, nor sorrow, nor care, Lord, hast Thou;
Nor passion doth fever, nor age can decay,
The same God for ever
As on yesterday.
5. Great Father of glory, pure Father of light,
Thine angels adore Thee, all veiling their sight;
Of all Thy good graces, this grace, Lord, impart—
Remove Thou the veil from
Our faces and heart.
6. All laud we would render; O help us to see,
’Tis only the splendor of light hideth Thee;
And now let Thy glory to our gaze unroll,
Through Christ in the story,
And Christ in the soul.
